Quality of Life
Houston Intercontinental is the place to be! The community is home to a variety of cultural, recreational and sports activities and facilities. Major events, facilities and professional sports teams are found in nearby Houston. In addition, overall lifestyle is enhanced by the forested beauty in some of the local areas. Sam Houston Race Park, a Class I thoroughbred and quarter horse racing facility, draws thousands of people from throughout southeast Texas to meets during much of the year.
PARKS AND RECREATION
Keith-Weiss Park, located southeast of the Aldine-Westfield and Aldine-Mail intersection, is one of the largest recreation areas in the city. This 400-acre park includes a portion of Halls Bayou, and features abundant open space.
Other nearby recreational locations for the local residents and employees are Wussow Park, CityView Park, Crowley Park, Melrose Park, Mueller Park and Dow Park. In addition, local golf courses provide ample recreational opportunities. Golfing is very popular at several nearby courses. Included are World Houston Golf Club and Guest Ranch, Lochinvar Country Club (designed by Jack Nicklaus) and El Dorado Country Club. Extensive golf activity also occurs in three other relatively close locales - The Woodlands, Kingwood and the "1960 Area." The Champions, Northgate and Raveneaux Country Clubs are in the latter area. Deerwood Country Club and Kingwood Country Club are to the northeast near U.S. 59, and The Woodlands golfing complex is to the north via Interstate 45.
Abundant youth activities are sponsored by the area YMCAs and local school districts. Youth leagues exist for such major sports as baseball, football and soccer.
LIBRARIES
Harris County operates two libraries in the North Houston Houston Intercontinental area. The Aldine and High Meadows facilities are branches of the Harris County Library system.
PERFORMING ARTS
In addition to plays, concerts and art exhibitions in Houston, fine arts activities are provided in the North Houston Houston Intercontinental area. Symphony North is an 80-member orchestra for musicians wishing to develop and display their talents. To the west, Playhouse 1960 performs numerous full feature plays. This non-profit group also operates a local children's theater. To the north in The Woodlands, the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion for the Performing Arts hosts major outdoor concerts throughout much of the year.
CHURCHES
Most of the main church denominations are found in the north Houston Houston Intercontinental area. Among the larger local denominations are Assembly of God, Southern Baptist, Catholic, Church of God, Episcopal, Jehovah's Witnesses, Lutheran, Methodist, Pentecostal and Presbyterian. In addition, many independent Christian churches exist in the local area.
MEDICAL SERVICE
Houston, referred to by many as the medical capital of the world, has exceptional care in north Houston. Area hospitals include: Houston Northwest Medical Center, Kindred Hospital, Memorial Hermann Northeast and Memorial Herman Northwest and St. Luke’s. Houston Northwest Medical Center, the largest in the area, offers complete health services and includes Women's Atrium for specialized female care.
